Do your holiday family traditions include watching movies together? If so, I highly recommend The Intern for its perfect—though fictional—representation of so many issues related to retirement. This film is hysterically funny yet poignant without being preachy. The Intern is about loss and feeling lost, transitions, change, repurposing your skills, intergenerational relationships, and starting a new life after a life-changing event.
Robert DeNiro plays the part of a retired executive who has recently lost his wife. He must overcome the loss of both this long-time relationship and his lengthy career. Other plot characters, including the lead played by Anne Hathaway, also overcome unexpected and overwhelming events and create new lives for themselves.
While a movie can’t prepare you for all the unexpected changes you may face in retirement, this one will leave you feeling more hopeful about your options.
