How do you define leisure? Dictionary.com defines leisure as “freedom from the demands of work or duty,” “time…when one can rest, enjoy hobbies or sports etc.” and “unhurried ease.” Richard Johnson, author of The New Retirement, stated that leisure is also “the degree to which you have found personally satisfying endeavors outside of your work/career arena which rejuvenate your body and/or stimulate your mind and/or enrich your spirit.” I encourage you to define leisure in this way no matter how old you are or what stage of life you are experiencing right now.
When you define leisure with such broad strokes, the possibilities are endless. Like you, your leisure time should be unique and made up of activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Don’t just settle for someone else’s dream or favorite pastime. Consider your opportunities related to
• Exercise
• Hobbies
• Personal development/lifelong learning
• Play (you don’t want leisure activities that feel like work)
• Self care
• Socializing
• Sports
• Time with family and friends
• Travel
• Unwinding (reading, listening to music, viewing media)
The Difference Between Your Leisure And Vacation Time
When you define leisure, you could be describing a vacation. However, a vacation lifestyle is rarely sustainable in the context of everyday life. Problems occur because constant leisure is not realistic. However, you can capture your favorite vacation moments and/or experiences and relive them during your leisure time. Try-
• Attending an art show, concert, or opening of a play
• Laughing, reading, singing, or sleeping more
• Exploring somewhere new
• Going for an early morning walk or a high-energy hike
• Taking pictures of whatever pleases you
• Trying a new restaurant
• Enjoying visits with family and friends
• Watching the sun rise and/or set
• Being in nature
No matter how you define leisure, don’t wait for your next vacation or, worse yet, your retirement to take time for leisure. Enjoy your favorite leisure activities right now.
