As you transition to retirement, I encourage you to focus on four things to help you thrive during this time of change.
1. Trust yourself more. You are a competent individual who has already successfully dealt with many changes in the past. You can do it again. It might be helpful to make a list of some of the life changes that you have encountered. Give yourself credit for the way you handled change in the past. Even if some changes were hard to overcome, that’s okay. You still did it.
2. Accept that change can be awkward and uncomfortable, whether it is positive or negative change. With any change, you are still out of your comfort zone and out of the tried and true. That’s okay. That’s how you grow.
3. Do something that makes you feel in control. This can be as simple as cleaning out clutter or something a little more complex, like learning a new computer skill.
4. Reach out to friends, family, or a life coach to support you through this time of transition.
As Leo Tolstoy said, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself [or herself].” By concentrating on these four things during this season of change, you can thrive and succeed.
