In a previous post (“Believe in yourself”), I wrote about the power of believing in yourself during times of change and transition. Believing in yourself and your power to succeed is very real. It is not just a confidence-booster for those who need a crutch during hard times. I speak from personal experience close to home.
I have three siblings. Each one was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer within the last 12 years. Prior to diagnosis, each of them was living a healthy lifestyle. Despite that, each had to face this horrible disease.
As treatment progressed for each one of them, they had the emotional support they needed and they believed in
• Themselves
• Courage to face the diagnosis
• Wisdom and knowledge to overcome fear
• Their ability and a strength to follow the treatment protocol
• Doing what they were encouraged to do by their medical team
• Their capacity to heal
Believing in themselves was how my siblings each coped with this terrible diagnosis, its treatment, and its life-changing aftermath in a positive way. There are many other situations—almost all the result of change and transitions—that will make “believing in yourself” of utmost importance. Like my siblings, you must remember that
• You are resilient
• You have past experiences to give you wisdom for your current situation (even if it means doing something different)
• How you handle change will make all the difference in how well you transition to your “new normal” in life or work
As my siblings discovered, the road to recovery is not easy. It can be long, slow-going, and arduous. At times, it can also be frightening for both the patient and those who love him/her.
• Believing in yourself
• Trusting the medical team
• Being surrounded by a support system of family, friends, and colleagues
all softened the impact of the transition. I am also happy to report that all three of my siblings are now doing very well and are in remission. Will believing in yourself help you in your current situation?
