Physical activity is crucial throughout life so start now to get training and learn skills you will want to carry over into your retirement years. As I mentioned in Successful Retirement Planning, I have been a runner and then a walker for most of my life. I have a good friend who has been ice skating since she was a teenager. When I joined her at the rink where she was practicing, I met an extraordinary group of women and men who have been ice skating for much of their lives. In fact, most became more active in their 50s by taking lessons and competing in competitive ice dancing (women) and ice hockey (men).
My friend’s group gathers three mornings a week to practice their ice dancing skills, take lessons, teach each other, and just have fun. Because the ice rink is in the middle of a mall, they also enjoy some extra attention.
Because they took the time to
• Find an enjoyable physical activity
• Learn basic skills and/or take lessons
• Practice
• Condition their bodies to prevent injuries
these men and women—ranging in age from 65 to 82—are now having a good time and providing a wonderful role model for how we could continue to remain vibrant, energetic, positive, and goal-oriented as we move into our later years.
What physical activity will you learn or master now to enjoy in your retirement years?
