Values-based decision-making leads to more successful outcomes during transitions. While others may simply react to changes in life circumstances, you can choose this method to create a new beginning and build something of value on the bedrock of your values and beliefs.
What is values-based decision-making?
This decision-making model allows you to repeatedly make consistent choices. Instead of
• Doing what everyone else does
• Pursuing instant gratification or a quick way out of a difficult situation
• Seeking riches instead of what you value most
• Trying to avoid further pain and grief
you make decisions that reinforce your personal values and beliefs.
How do you incorporate values-based decision-making into life’s transitions?
During transition periods, I help my clients identify values related to that particular transition and rank them in order of importance. When faced with decisions, it is then easy to look at the list of values and ask “does this support what I value most?”
• If being close to family and friends is at the top of your list of values as you consider a job offer or get ready to retire, “relationships” is a core value for you. Moving far away—or far enough away that getting together would be a hardship—would undermine this family-centric value.
• If you are now a single parent due to death or divorce and your top priority is your children’s emotional health, you will give them the time and attention they need—especially during the first year. However, if you value adult companionship more, then dating and remarriage will take precedence. These are value decisions only you can make as you begin life as a single parent (although the ages of your children may play a significant part in how you perceive their needs).
