A legacy is something passed from one generation to the next. It can take many forms and be perceived as either positive or negative. Legacies best reflect our true selves when we pass on
• A family business along with an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic, perseverance, and commitment
• Family heirlooms and other meaningful objects
• Ideas
• Positive attitudes
• School spirit for future generations who choose to attend the same alma mater
• Traditions
• Values
As Albert Pine observed, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.” This is a true legacy.
How can you leave a legacy?
• Record the stories behind cherished family heirlooms and pass on the heirlooms
• Create a business plan that will make it easy for your successor
• Share ideas that have helped your family grow and thrive
• Model an attitude of praise and thanksgiving instead of gloom and doom
• Provide funds for your grandchildren to attend your alma mater
• Write down the history behind family traditions
• Let your values be evident in your actions
• Be generous with kind words—you don’t want to be remembered as the parent/grandparent that never said they were proud of their children/grandchildren
